Fresh Paint Provides New Look When Students Return from Spring Break

Spring is a traditionally a time for sprucing things up and members of Glendale West Rotary did just that on a recent Saturday.  Rotarians and Landmark Elementary School staff painted the school together on the district’s first official day of Spring Break.  Painting Project leader Mike Zenor said the project was selected because the school is so important in the community and had identified exterior painting as a priority.  Zenor organized the Rotarian volunteers while school Principal Gina Schmitz coordinated the event from the district side. After the painting was completed Glendale West members provided a barbeque at the school for painter and their families.

Rotary’s focus on literacy originally led the club to Landmark Elementary.  The club began supporting the school’s Literacy Nights by providing personal books for all second grade students.  At the same time, the club coordinated a book drive that resulted in more than 600 books collected for classroom libraries.  Naturally, the club supplied a personal dictionary to all Landmark 3rd graders.

Landmark Elementary School serves a population that is considered to have the greatest need in Glendale, with over 95% of the students qualifying for free/reduced lunch.  The school transitioned to an Elementary from a Middle School last year and has great need for all things related to the K-3 population.  Glendale West has adopted the school and is committed to ongoing support.

In December club members visited 13 classrooms of 3rd graders to present each child with his or her first dictionary!  What a fun, rewarding and valuable experience for all concerned!  A common question was "You mean I can keep this?  Take it home?  It's all mine??"

Pictured is GWRotarian Dawn Dolezal at a Landmark Elementary classroom.  In the background note the kids practicing sign language, one of the many     additional treasures to be found in the dictionaries.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Shares Dynamic Story

GWRotarians heard first-hand how the Rotary Foundation impacts lives both internationally and here in the US when Kelly Tiller shared her amazing background of service and international travel.  Kelly is currently a first year student at Thunderbird School of Global Management where she is participating in a customized program focusing on Marketing, Global Strategy and Human Capital Management. Kelly has presented to over 25 Rotary Clubs and her passion for her service was clear as she shared about the Ambassadorial Scholar Program: the mission, the selection process, the funding.  Kelly told about her year in Chile, including the project she founded, the lives it impacted, the ongoing benefits, and the USA-based project that was started as a result.

GWRotarians are committed to supporting the Rotary Foundation, which funds remarkable life-changing efforts, such as international projects, polio eradication, education and peace/goodwill.

Touching Lives in Africa - April 25 Speaker an inspiration!
After retiring in 2009 from a 36 year career in education, Dudley Butts volunteered with Save The Children in Swaziland, Africa, consulting on education and social justice issues.  As a result of his time in Swaziland he has created a project called MyBrother MySister.  The project’s objective and mission is to help support and provide resources for 27 child-headed households of orphaned children.

Dudley has just returned from his second volunteer stint to this area of Africa-- this time with a project called Imagine Scholar.  He shared his experiences on both projects.
Here is a testimonial from Imagine Scholar's director, Corey Johnson:
"After retiring from a distinguished career as a teacher, principal, and finally superintendent, no one would have faulted Dudley Butts for sitting back and reaping the benefits of an impressive lifetime’s work.  Instead, he moved halfway across the world and invested himself in Imagine Scholar.   He brought decades of experience, cooking and dancing skills, and maybe most importantly; a warm and open heart.  To some of the students he is a caring grandfather; to others he is proof that “old people can be cool”.  What he is to all the students, and the staff, is evidence of what a difference one generous, creative, funny, and caring person can make.   The entire Imagine Scholar family thanks Mr. D for the last 3 months of service, and is already looking forward to his next trip to South Africa."

The websites for the two projects are: www.MyBrotherMySister.org and www.imaginescholar.org.

Glendale West Rotarians Tom Hutchinson and Valerie Carlson look over a richly decorated display of Hermosillo projects.

The  12th Annual USA-Mexico Friendship Conference and Matching Grants Fair was a huge success!  This year the event was hosted by AZ Districts 5490 and 5510 and visitors came from a variety of clubs in Puebla, Cuernavaca, Teziutlan, Hermosillo and Nogales.  Mexican Rotarians began arriving November 26 and our last visitors departed the Friday after Thanksgiving.  About 2/3 of the Mexican guests were home hosted -- an awesome way to Build Goodwill and Better Friendships!  The 3-day event included tours of AZ Rotary Projects, a full-day Matching Grants Fair and a day of hands-on Rotary activity.  Of course, there was plenty of fun, food and fellowship.  You can read more about that in the next issue of our District 5490 newsletter.

Tom Hutchinson, Valerie Carlson and Nancy Van Pelt were on hand at the Matching Grants Fair to identify an international, matching grants project for Glendale West.  There were lots of worthy choices, but in the end the club's representatives selected a project to ensure safe drinking water in 43 elementary schools in Nogales MX through fountains with water filters.  Glendale West is teaming with Goodyear White Tanks, Prescott Sunup and the Grand Canyon clubs to support the Nogales Sur Club in delivering this project.Image

It is almost that time of the year where old leadership will welcome new club leadership. Please keep an eye, and ear, out for details on our Change-over Party.

Next Monday's meeting will be a club assembly.  We will talk about upcoming club service projects and what efforts we plan to fund.

Our sister club, the Peoria North Rotary Club, now meets at Fox and Hound on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m..  Don't confuse this with our mommy/daddy club, the Peoria Rotary Club.  They're still meeting on Friday mornings at Theater Works.  Both are great clubs to visit!

We will be joining the Peoria Rotary Club at Friendly House (www.friendlyhouse.org) to paint and repair classrooms in their Early Childhood Development Center in central Phoenix.  Please keep the morning of Saturday, June 6th available for this project.

And finally, it's time for Peoria's 3rd Annual Pancake Dinner - Tuesday, May 19th at Centennial High School.  Chuck will have details at our May 11th meeting!

We had a great club social last Monday.  We celebrated John Burk's promotion to Colonel.  No need to salute him unless you are both in uniform!

The Rotary cap worn by Bill Gates during his recent $255M donation speech just sold to the highest bidder.  Any guesses how much it went for?  $17,600.  The money will go to fighting Polio!
